Entrepreneurship is a challenging but rewarding endeavor. One of the most difficult aspects of running a business is choosing when and if to take personal time off (PTO). Although there are various reasons why many business owners are hesitant to take time off, spending time away from the business can lead to greater success for the following reasons:

Increases productivity. Taking a vacation allows the mind and the body to rest. As a result of this rest, people are more productive when they return to work. In fact, one study found that for every 10 hours of vacation time given to employees, productivity rose 8%. Productivity is the driving force of any type of successful business.

Reduces stress. Too much stress is bad for the mind, body, and soul. Entrepreneurs are more likely to experience stress because of the energy and time it takes to create and maintain a business. Vacations are important because they relieve stress while also increasing energy levels.

Prevents burnout. Work tasks can become monotonous and more difficult over time, which can lead to burnout. This is particularly true for entrepreneurs because of the long hours they work and all of their management responsibilities. Taking time off gives a business owner time to reevaluate goals and decreases the likelihood of becoming overwhelmed.

Indeed, relinquishing business responsibilities and taking personal time away from work can prove beneficial for entrepreneurs and their businesses. The amount of time an entrepreneur takes off should be balanced with the amount of time they work. Some business owners choose to take one extended vacation per year. However, others believe that taking several shorter vacations per year is more ideal. It’s important for business owners to figure out what amount of vacation time is best for them and their business.

A lack of work/life balance leads to burnout, stress, and a loss of productivity. A successful business depends on the health and productivity of its owner. A failure to take the proper amount of personal time off can lead to the instability of the company. Entrepreneurs should view vacations as a way to rejuvenate, relieve stress, and an opportunity to develop strategies to improve the business in the future.
